The absurdity of Patrick Mahomes, plus mailbag #3

Another week, another dominating performance by Patrick Mahomes. You would think that this guy is going to show eventually that he is human just like all of us, but I have numbers to prove otherwise. In 13 of 20 starts he has thrown for at least 3 TD’s and has the most TD’s of anyone through their first 20 starts in NFL history. Through these first 20 starts, Mahomes has only passed for under 250 yards twice. To put that into a better context, Tom Brady only threw for over 250 yards 6 times in his first 20 starts.

In 10 regular season games against teams with a winning record, Mahomes has completed 66% of his passes with a TD to INT ratio of 27:9 and 3,515 passing yards. All these stats have shown that no he is not human and yes he is probably going to get even better.

When the Chiefs lost Tyreek Hill, some thought this would hurt them going forward. Instead Mahomes turned Demarcus Robinson and Mecole Hardman into fantasy football studs and the Chiefs have mostly dominated the start of the 2019 season. The season is in its infant stages but Mahomes has jumped out to a nice lead on the MVP race with his video game stat line through 3 weeks.

I feel like it is almost a pretty simple answer on what separates Mahomes from everyone else. His combination of arm strength and accuracy is a gift, this throw last year against the Ravens is the best indicator.

Now this isn’t the only reason he has been so great. He displays great ability to process defenses and can extend plays at will. The arm strength and accuracy is just the staple to his game and why he can create so many big plays and put pressure on the opposing offense to keep up.

The big question is when does this start translating to championship level success? Going toe to toe against Tom Brady in the AFC Championship game in his first year as a starter showed he was ready for the moment. Year 2 as a starter he has shown he only scratched the surface of what he can become as a QB and I do think they will make a Super Bowl run led by the outstanding play of Mahomes and the receiving corps.

Only got a few questions for the mailbag this week so we’ll finish up here.

Where will Derek Carr play next year?

Another rough start for the Raiders definitely has to put Carr’s future at question. I can’t say I believe Carr is the reason behind the Raiders struggles over the past 3 seasons. Carr is a capable QB who displays good accuracy and competitive toughness. However, he hasn’t got back to that potential MVP level we saw from him in 2016. I think it all depends on where the Raiders are picking in the next year’s draft and what they see from their young players. If they are in position to grab Tua or Fromm, I believe they should move on from Carr. I just don’t think they will be that bad so I am saying he sticks with the Raiders for at least the first Vegas season. If the ship can’t be turned around by then it will be time to move on.

Does Kliff Kingsbury know how to utilize David Johnson properly?

This seems like it is coming from a very concerned fantasy owner. The Cardinals have not run the ball much as their best weapon on offense has 36 carries through 3 games. I think Kingsbury is more focused on utilizing DJ in the passing game and helping Kyler grow in the air raid system. The problem is with this offense, Kyler actually doesn’t force to the check down as most young QB’s would. Kyler likes to push the ball down field and targets Larry Fitz and Christian Kirk on a regular basis which means DJ takes a backseat in this facet of the offense as well. Kingsbury should notice that he has thrown over 40 times in every game so far and they are 0-2-1, and giving a guy like David Johnson more touches can help them win games and end this tough start.
